7/5/2023 0 Comments Silver in the wood emily tesh![]() ![]() ![]() In the old-fashioned language of folklore, Silver in the Wood tells a tale about a 400-year-old inhabitant of the forest named Tobias Finch. Perhaps a bit single-minded, and Tesh lost me here and there, but I fell in love with the book as it is and wouldn’t change a word. It’s an utterly enchanting piece of work. This will be a short review, not just because Silver in the Wood is a scant 100 pages, but because the novella is so wonderful I see no need to ask you to read more of my words when you could be reading Emily Tesh’s instead. Add queer romance, a steely mama witch hunter, and the tension of knowing what a sweet, silly love interest doesn’t know. Think of the loveliest, most shivery story you ever read, perhaps from a crumbling book of folk tales, and combine it with a book of nature writing. ![]() 7/5/2023 0 Comments Book of atonement![]() ![]() ![]() Our special guest for the evening will be Professor Helen McCarthy who teaches modern British history at the University of Cambridge. The final book has a good who-dunnit plot that gets side-lined by what-happened-to-Harper-and-what-is-she-going-to-do-about-it. Harper Connelly’s struggle to come to terms with her past, make the best of her strange talent and find a place for herself in the future holds these four books together.Īs the books progress, the balance between focusing on the death Harper Connelly is involved with (she has a talent for being able to find the bodies of the dead and then see their final moments) and her personal history (abusive, drug addicted parents, abducted elder sister, relationship with the man she grew up thinking of as her brother but to whom she is not related) shifts in favour of resolving Harper’s own conflicts. “Grave Secret”, concludes the Harper Connelly series of four books. ![]() 7/5/2023 0 Comments The codebreakers kahn![]() ![]() ![]() Kahns The Codebreakers takes the measure of what codes and codebreaking have.
